Changing a video

You can change a video at any time after you publish it. Most changes keep the link of the video.

The edit window

Double-click a video in the Library, or choose Edit… from its menu. Each video opens in its own window, so you can edit two videos at the same time.

The edit window of a video
Part What it has
Watch The link of the player page, with a button that copies it.
Media The address of the folder of the video on the media hostname, with a copy button. Your own player adds the name of a file to it. See The addresses of the files.
Embed Copy Embed Code copies the embed code of the video.
Title, Description, Reference The details, as on the confirm screen.
Visibility Public or Unlisted.
Video The duration, the size and the audio loudness, and Replace Video….
Poster The poster, and Change Poster….
Subtitles The tracks of the video. See Subtitles.

Nothing changes on your site until you click Save. Cancel, the close button and ⌘W ask before they discard your changes.

While the edit window of a video is open, the Library cannot delete, move or replace that video. So two changes cannot conflict.

A change shows on the player page at its next load.

Change the poster

In the edit window, click Change Poster…. Choose a frame with the slider or the strip of frames, then click Use This Frame. Or click Use Image… to use an image file. The new poster uploads when you save.

From the Library, Change Poster ▸ Use Image… uploads an image file as the poster at once.

Kitset clears the old poster from the Cloudflare cache. A browser can show the old poster for up to 5 minutes.

Change the visibility

  • From public to unlisted: the video moves to a new link with a random part. The old link and every embed of the video stop working, and the public home page no longer lists it. Kitset asks first. This is necessary, because people already know the public link.
  • From unlisted to public: the link stays the same, so the links that people have still work.

A move to a new link copies the files inside Cloudflare, so nothing uploads from your Mac. Then Kitset deletes the old folder and clears its files from the Cloudflare cache.

Replace a video

Replace Video… gives a published video a new file, for example a new cut. The link, the title, the description, the reference and the visibility stay. So do the embeds of the video on other sites.

  1. Choose Replace Video… from the menu of the video in the Library, or in its edit window.
  2. Choose the new file. The Upload window shows the replacement screen.
  3. Check the subtitles. Each current track has Keep or Remove, and you can add new files. When the new video has a different duration, Kitset warns that the current subtitles may not match.
  4. Choose the audio loudness. The menu starts with the default of the site.
  5. Click Replace Video.
  6. Review the poster. The review starts with the current poster, so a poster that you designed stays. You can also choose a frame of the new video, an image file or no poster. Use Current Poster goes back to the current poster.

The current video plays until the new video is ready. Then Kitset switches the video and deletes the old files. A person who watches during the switch can see a playback error. A browser can keep the old playlist for up to 5 minutes, and a new load of the page after that time plays the new video.

If the replacement fails, the current video stays playable.

To replace many videos, use a re-import in a bulk upload or a Vimeo sync.

Change several videos

Select two or more videos in the Library. A bar at the bottom replaces the publish bar.

The Library with several videos selected, and the bar that changes them
  • Visibility: choose Public or Unlisted, then click Apply. A change from public to unlisted gives each public video a new link, and Kitset asks first.
  • Delete…: deletes the selected videos. Kitset asks first.
  • Cancel clears the selection.

The videos change one at a time. A failure does not stop the other videos. At the end, one message lists the problems.

The bar skips a video that cannot change now, for example a video with an open edit window. The bar shows how many it skips.

Delete a video

Choose Delete… from the menu of a video, or press Delete. Kitset deletes every file of the video from your bucket. You cannot undo a delete.

Then Kitset clears the files of the video from the Cloudflare cache, so nobody can download them from the cache.

The Cloudflare cache

Cloudflare keeps copies of your video files near your viewers. When a move, a delete or a replacement removes files, Kitset clears their copies.

Each Mac usually clears the cache with its R2 API Token. A token from an earlier version of Kitset, or a token that you made by hand, cannot do this. Then Kitset asks for Touch ID and uses the Cloudflare Account API Token.

If Kitset cannot clear the cache, it warns that the old files can stay in the cache. The change itself is complete. A person who knows the addresses of the old files can still download them for a time.
